One of the benefits of working as a creative is being influenced and using personal experiences, both unique and shared, as an advantage to effectively communicate a message.
Here are some of the things that make up my creative vision.
Like most creatives, music plays a big part in my design process. I have had a love affair with vinyl records since I was a kid, specifically the jazz releases from Blue Note Records.
Not only has the music served as a soundtrack to many design all nighters, but the album cover design by legendary graphic designer, Reid Miles has proved to be the most influential on my career. I learned to master the principles of design by studying the body of his work.
In order to remain creatively inspired and engaged, it is important to have a good work / life balance. I am blessed to have a wonderful wife who has been supportive of my career, and an amazing son, who is a constant reminder to the importance of having my priorities straight.
In the early 2000’s, I became obsessed with screen printing and set out to teach myself all I could about the craft. Since 2008, along with my wife, I have managed the small manual press shop, Amerikan Made Prints, located in rural Pennsylvania.
Our vision is to turn out hand printed, limited edition posters that “rock harder than Gibraltar” and are affordable for everyone.
I do not consider myself to be a traditional illustrator, as I never set out to be one. However, I do love the challenge of adapting or exploring a new or unfamiliar style in order to complete an assignment.
At one point I had seriously considered pursuing a career as a writer, but the passion to create visual output was too great to ignore. I often will write a lot of my own copy for comps and presentations, and I believe that often the tone of the message, is just as important to a brand / product as any visual collateral.
